Funny thing about the Devil…He’ll give you exactly what you ask for in trade for your soul. The problem is in the askin….. You see in my particular situation I wanted to be the best blues guitarist in the world….and that’s just what he gave me. I rolled into Memphis on that freight thinkin that I was a bad motherfucker. I had a silver plated pearl handled .38 in my belt and my trusty six string in an alligator case….One bad man….except for the clothes you see I’d never been to a big city and you could play the juke joints in your field clothes an nobody gave a shit. I must have been a sight gittin off the train with my muddy boots an bib overalls….country as shit.                                                                                                           So what do you do when you get when you get to where you goin an all you got is a few dollars an the clothes on your back?    You panhandle of course. I started playin on the street corners,playin the songs my Papa an Grandaddy taught me….an do you know I didn’t make a thin dime. Nobody wanted to hear that old time blues.They was into the new sound…..The sound of electricity.

I remember this one cat…real sharp dresser. He had a maroon suit with shoes an hat to match. He had a long case in his hand and he had something that looked like a radio in the other.I followed this cat into a bar down on Bealle street. He walks into the bar an walks straight up onto the stage. He opened the case and took out something that looked like a board with strings on it.Then he took a telephone chord and put it into the bottom of this board and took the other end and plugged it into the radio.Then he proceeded to strum this board…….the sound that came out was hypnotizing….I nearly shit my pants. It was an electric guitar.This was the sound that everybody was hooked on. No wonder I wasn’t makin no money I made up my mind right then that I was gonna get me one……an I knew just how to do it……
